The ocean has always been a source of fascination and inspiration for humankind, regularly the subject of both our scientific pursuits and our artistic endeavors since the beginning of recorded history. And yet, despite our centuries of unquenchable curiosity, we know more today about the surface of Mars than what lies beneath the surface of these mysterious bodies of water — a fact that only seems to further spark our interest and imagination. Ocean is a look at the many ways we’ve explored these depths in both art and science throughout time, based on a large thematic exhibit that appeared at Denmark's Louisiana Museum of Modern Art back in 2024. Within these pages, you’ll find works of art, literature and film, as well as scientific illustrations, archaeological research and natural history studies, all devoted to the ocean and its inhabitants, both real and imagined. Interspersed throughout this mosaic of images, you’ll also find thoughtful essays that further dive into the book's three major themes — the ocean between art and science, the sublime and mythical ocean and the Anthropocene ocean. From Utagawa Kuniyoshi’s woodblock prints and classic paintings of storm-tossed waves and sea gods to Jean Painleve’s quietly poetic photographs of marine life and Anna Atkin’s curious algae cyanotypes, Ocean offers a well-rounded look at how the ocean has acted as a muse for both the art and science worlds alike. All other non-furniture items can be returned for a full refund, as long as they are returned within either 30 days of purchase if bought in store or 30 days after the order was received if bought on our website. We will inspect the returned item(s) and issue a refund to the same credit card used for original purchase. You will receive a confirmation email once we have processed your credit. All shipping charges are non-refundable and will be deducted from your refund.
